A Sketchy Character: UPDATED
UPDATED: I redrew the figure to correct some problems with the construction, lighting, and folds, and to make it more legible when scanned. Enjoy!
Hey kids, sorry I’ve been gone awhile. To make up for it, here is the first ever sketch of The Victory Streak in action!
I’m afraid the scan is kinda crappy. After I scanned the drawing, I tried inking it and remembered that my inking skills are waaayyyy behind my meager penciling skills. I’m going to “recover” it by tracing over it on a clean sheet using my lightbox, and see if I can tighten it up with a darker pencil that will scan better. If it’s appreciably better, I’ll post it.
Gotta go. I understand a friend is having a crisis of confidence and I need to set him straight.

Nice.
The page you had up before really didn’t have much to judge the work with on it. While this doesn’t show your abilities as far as layouts and visual storytelling, I can honestly say that I’m really impressed by the look of your figure style. Basic in the way of using what’s needed without adding in lots of unnecessary line work. It actually reminds me a little of Steve Rude’s style from about ’88 to ’94.

Very nice. You have a very classic style that I love. Clean, minimalist but showing emotion. I only do landscapes because I could never show any emotional range in people, so I appreciate anyone who can…it’s not easy.

There’s a sense of movement and depth there. And “classic” is certainly a good word to describe him, clean, defined, wanting to leap from the page.

I have to tell you, I liked the first one more. I don’t know, the thin scetchy lines seem right to me for a character whose power is super speed. I second Jerry, Jennifer and Sean. The simple minimalist but dynamic style captures the character very well. The sun glasses show that he is trying to detach himself or hie somehow. The hard part now will be to draw his other persona.

Thank God, someone old enough to appreciate actual linework and traditional comics style anatomy. I like it lots.
Jerry’s Steve Rude observation is good–and I liked Steve Rude a lot back in the day.

Well, I don’t know what to say about everyone’s kind words except… I’m humbled. And thanks.
*Any* comparisons to Steve Rude are incredibly high praise in my book, by the way. Not necessarily well-deserved on my part… but high praise nevertheless!
In terms of the minimalist look — that’s a combination of artistic choice and limitations in my drawing skills. As I perfect the latter, I’ll probably stick with the former — although you’ll see that style evolve as I get better.
