I can go you one better than that. I was listening to the Saint/Atlanta game at work on the local radio station. One of the announcers, a former Saint player, compared Atlanta's "problems" with Vick to what the city of New Orleans suffered from Katrina. I still can't believe he said it or that no one followed up on it. It was a quick off the cuff comment, but still....

Second chance talk this soon? No, no chance in hell.

Michael and Marcus Vick are both scumbags and neither one of them deserves a second chance for a long time to come. Michael should have learned enough from Marcus’s legal issues to avoid the stupidity himself and Marcus should have gotten his act together long before he flushed his career. I’m sorry, but I’m fed up with them and anyone like them.

I know people who are living good, honest, decent and law abiding lives that are just barely making ends meet or even falling short of being able to do that. They’re busting their asses working overtime or working two or three jobs and not seeing their families for most of the week, every single week of the year, due to their work schedules and giving up a lot of special moments with their families all year long as well.

And then you’ve got bozos like the Vick brothers. They got to a point with their skills at football where they were both being courted by major franchises and both were looking at long runs with major money contracts. For “working” for only a portion of the year, they were looking at millions in contracts and endorsements for, barring freak accidents, years to come. And all they had to do to ensure those mega paydays for basically playing a F’N game was stay in shape, show up on time and stay out of major legal troubles.

And both of them were too stupid to do that.

Marcus the so-slow-as-to-be-not-at-all learner was bad enough. He kept refusing to learn from his troubles and washed himself out of any real career chances before it even really got going. But Michael… He had it all at this point and he had all of his brother’s legal stupidities as a ”hits close to home” example. Instead of looking at his brother’s career suicide and, you know, maybe learning something from it, he took everything he had and flushed it away because he’s just too stupid to not know how to not F up when life hands you a giant glass of lemonade.

And now the idiots at ESPN, Fox Sports and other outlets are already rushing forward to declare the need for giving Michael a second chance. I’m sorry, no. Not now, not next year and probably not for the next five years. Michael may be going to jail, paying fines and being stripped of lucrative endorsements and paychecks, but he still has every dime in the bank that he had before. He’ll likely still walk out of jail with more money in the bank then most of us will see in the next ten years of our lives.

Now, if most of us screwed up like Vick, we’d likely be leaving jail with no house (repossessed) to come home to, far fewer possessions (sold to cover debts) to call our own and no where near the number of public figures that Vick has calling for his second chances even thinking about ours. We would be starting over from almost zero with a criminal record being held against us as we look for jobs. And even if we were to get lucky and get a job right off the bat, we would likely spend years working up to where we were before as far as standard of living/income.

No, don’t talk around me this soon about the need to give Vick a second chance. Until guys like Vick actually have punishments that mean the same to their lives as the punishments meted out to “the common man” they will continue to act like screw ups. So long as being a celebrity means never really having to learn from your mistakes or truly pay for them, we’ll always be talking about a “Vick” of some sort or another who’s just too stupid to realize that they’ve got it made in the shade and will still try and get one by the system, the law or society as a whole.

No, no “second chance” or talk thereof this soon.
