Well done Bill! This is a tough subject to write about without sounding clichéd and you've really captured it. A lot of us have someone like this in our lives (with whom we've ended things badly and lost touch) and it strikes a chord. The paragraph about "I find myself unable to distill this experience into some kind of easily quotable bromide about how we should be nice to the living because we don't know when they'll be taken from us," is particularly good. It does a great job of dealing with the notion that there is no fairy tale ending and no pat solution. Our lives are complex and we sometimes just have to accept that.

Great blog. Give a shout when the next entry goes up.

Shirley and 'Cat, thank you both for the kind words. This wasn't easy to write or to post. But ironically it's exactly the type of risk I was encouraged to take by the instructor of the writing class where my late friend and I met.
